  • $1.99 shipping and free in-store pick-up
  • Return anytime
  • Almost 30,000 fabrics to pick from

When thinking of a craft store, JoAnn Fabrics is one of the first stores that comes to mind. The store was founded in 1943 as a single store, and today it is the leading fabric and craft specialty store in the nation. They have approximately 850 stores in 49 states plus a robust online storefront you can browse from home.

Almost 30,000 choices

When it comes to having a wide variety of fabric, JoAnn's is the place to look. They have quilt cotton fabric, customizable fabric, keepsake calico cotton fabric, super snuggle flannel, licensed cotton fabric, novelty cotton fabric, precut fabrics, premium cotton fabric, team cotton, multi-purpose decor fabric, anti-pill plush fleece, quilter's showcase cotton fabric, Jacquard fabric, blizzard fleece and outdoor fabric. This online fabric store really does have something for everyone.

Affordable pricing

JoAnn offers affordable pricing on their fabrics. Plain cotton, single color fabric is $7.99 per yard, but we saw some patterns on sale even cheaper. The more you purchase, the more you can save. If you spend $75, you will get 10% off and if you spend $125, you will get 15% off your order. If you purchase a bolt of 10 yards, you will save an additional 10%. The minimum number of yards to order varies per fabric.

Website gives you the details you need

When looking at a fabric to order, JoAnn's website has the required minimum yards, ways to get it (ship to you or pick up in store) and a description of the fabric. The description includes the width, content, care, if it's reorderable and the bolt size.

Ways to save

When you first go to JoAnn's website, there is a pop-up. If you enter your e-mail address, you will receive special offers and an extra 25% off your first order. They have a section in their drop-down menu that offers coupons and the weekly sales ad. You are able to find more discounts here. Typically, you are not able to use a coupon on any sale item, so keep that in mind if you were hoping to double stack. JoAnn's also offers discounts for teachers, military and healthcare workers. This discount is 15% and you just need to sign up on their website.

$1.99 shipping

At the time of this review, JoAnn's was offering $1.99 shipping, simply by hitting apply at the top of the website. When we did that, we got to choose between 25% off any order online/pick-up in-store purchase or $1.99 flat rate shipping. The discount was applied to both regular and sale-priced items. Exclusions included doorbusters and clearance. There was also an additional $1.95 handling fee. Orders ship within 1-3 business days and should be delivered within 6-10 business days. For curbside and in-store pick-up, as long as you place your order by 3pm, it is free and your order will be ready the same day.

Return any time, hassle-free

There is no return date limit for JoAnn's. You may return at any time without hassle. If you choose to return your fabric to the store, there are no associated fees. If you choose to return a sewing machine, there is a $25 restocking fee. If you do not have your receipt when making a return, you may exchange the item or take store credit, and the amount you receive for store credit will be based on the lowest price in the last 90 days. If you wish to return by mail, you may fill out the "Contact Us" form. They will refund the cost of the fabric minus a $7.95 return shipping and handling fee. Refunds are sent to the original form of payment.

Low rating from customers

JoAnn's has a "B" rating from the Better Business Bureau. When looking at what customers have to say, JoAnn falls short with 1.5 stars. Customers state that when problems arise, they are given the runaround. They are being told to email someone else and when they send that one they get told to email someone else yet again. Another customer complained that every time they try to order with over 30 items in their cart, it glitches and deletes everything, forcing them to start over. This can become frustrating. There are also a large number of complaints on orders being canceled without notice.

Choose what is important

When it comes to shopping for fabric at JoAnn's, you will need to choose what is important to you. They have an excellent return policy, but it can be difficult to accomplish that when getting the runaround. They have the option to pick-up in-store or to ship to you for $1.99, but orders get canceled often. You will need to decide for yourself if the many pros outweigh the frustrating cons at JoAnn's.

Where Can You Find the Best Fabric Stores Online?

Buying fabric online can be a convenient and cost-effective way to purchase materials for your sewing projects or textile projects. There are many online retailers that sell a wide variety of fabrics, ranging from natural fibers like cotton and silk to synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon. Plus, they give you the advantage of shopping for fabrics from the comfort of your home or office.

One of the advantages of online fabric stores is that they offer a wider selection of fabrics than many brick-and-mortar stores, and they are often able to source unique and hard-to-find fabrics. Online fabric stores may also offer related products such as sewing notions, patterns, and trims. They may also have a section for clearance fabrics or offer sales and discounts periodically. They also usually provide fast shipping options, and some may offer free shipping for orders over a certain amount.

Fabric Store FAQ

What is a fabric store?

A fabric store specializes in selling textiles, sewing supplies, and other related products. These retailers often carry a wide selection of fabrics, including cotton, silk, linen, and synthetic fibers.

What products do fabric stores sell?

Fabric stores typically sell a wide range of products, including fabric by the yard, sewing patterns, thread, buttons, zippers, and other sewing supplies. They may also offer classes and workshops for sewing and textile arts.

What should I look for when shopping at a fabric store?

You should consider the type of fabric you need, the quality of the fabric, and the price. You should also check out the retailer's reputation, see if there are any customer reviews on the fabric you're considering, and see if there's a decent return policy.

Why would I buy fabric online?

Like anything else you might shop for, you get the best selection and the most convenience when buying fabric from an online store. There's no need to drag yourself across town hoping that something will catch your eye when you can just browse, click, and order. Simple as that!

I got my measurements wrong! Now what?

That depends on the fabric store. Some retailers offer very forgiving return policies, while others essentially say "we cut it, you own it" . If you feel like you need more wiggle room, especially on a more spendy fabric, be sure to check out the return policy before you click "order now" .

Are fabric stores only for sewing projects?

While fabric stores are primarily used by those interested in sewing and textile arts, they can also be a source of inspiration and materials for a variety of other craft projects. You may even find the material you were looking for to upholster your living room furniture.

Why should I buy from a fabric store instead of a big-box retailer?

Fabric stores often have a wider selection of high-quality fabrics and specialize in textiles and sewing supplies, while big box stores may have a limited selection of fabrics and focus more on household items. You're more likely to get everything you need for your next project at a fabric store, which saves you time (and maybe money too).

Can I find sales and discounts at online fabric stores?

Yes, many fabric stores offer the same sales and discounts you'd spot at a brick-and-mortar location, especially during holiday seasons. Be sure to sign up for the store's email list or follow them on social media to stay updated on current promotions.

Continued from above...

Online fabric stores may have different categories for fabrics, such as by material type, pattern, color, texture, and end-use. You can browse through the fabrics available and add the ones you like to your shopping cart. Most online fabric stores also provide detailed descriptions and high-quality images of the fabrics to help you make an informed decision.

The type of fabric you choose will depend on the specific project you are working on. Natural fibers like cotton and linen are good for lightweight clothing items, while synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon are good for outdoor gear and sportswear. Similarly, the weight of the fabric refers to its thickness and drape. Lightweight fabrics are good for summer clothing, while heavier fabrics are good for winter clothing.

Online retailers offer a wide variety of prints and patterns, so you can easily find the perfect fabric for your project. Some retailers even offer custom printing, so you can have a unique fabric made just for you. When shopping for fabric online, it can be difficult to determine the quality of the fabric. Look for reviews from other customers to get an idea of how the fabric measures up (pun intended) in real life.

What else should you keep in mind when deciding where to buy your fabric? Here are a few additional factors:

  • Price. Online retailers often offer competitive prices, but it is important to compare different retailers to find the best deal. Shipping can be a part of that comparison, since some fabric stores have a minimum spend to get free shipping, while others don't offer complimentary delivery no matter how big your order is.
  • Quantity. Do you have to purchase the fabric by the yard, or can you get it in smaller measurements?
  • Returns. Before making a purchase, be sure to read the return policy of the online retailer. Some retailers may have a limited return policy or may not accept returns on any cut fabric.
  • Reputation. What do other customers say about the fabric store? Is it easy to get help if you need it? Does the customer service team do a good job of responding to any problems that might arise?

To help you get just the right material for your next project, Top Consumer Reviews has evaluated and ranked today's most popular online fabric stores. We hope this makes it easy - and fun - to find the perfect fabric. Happy crafting!
